In a very late offer to spare a 45 year old Sri Lankan mother of three from being "stoned to death" for infidelity in Saudi Arabia on Friday, Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and kindred Ministers A.H.M.Fowzie and Thalatha Athukorale met the Saudi Charge d' Affaires here on Wednesday, and looked for "leniency" for her.
A Foreign Ministry public statement said that the Ministers looked for the "liberality of the Saudi government and asked for thoughtful thought in appreciation of the blamed."
Further, Foreign Minister Samaraweera asked for the Charge d' Affaires to orchestrate him to identify with the Saudi Foreign Minister "at the most punctual" to look for leniency for the Sri Lankan national.
A Dawadmi court in Riyadh had sentenced the lady to be stoned to death, while her unmarried Lankan lover was sentenced to 100 lashes for "sex".
In the connection of the unforgiving sentence on a Lankan lady, the arrangement of Saudi Arabia to the Chair of the UN Human Rights Council has come in for sharp feedback in Sri Lanka.
In any case, it is noticed that stoning to death is recommended in the Old Testament and not in the Quran, and that stoning to death is honed in just six of the 49 Muslim commanded nations on the planet.
